Low operating and capital costs compared to rail haulage, truck and conveyors:
Rail-Veyor® combines the best of conventional rail haulage, truck and conveyor systems into a low capital and operating cost system that offers superior energy efficiency and environmental performance.
Rail-Veyor® offers the following advantages:
Competitive Capital Costs
- Light rail track (40 pound rail vs. conventional 120 pound rail) can be used without ballast and ties, thereby reducing the cost and time for bed preparation and installation
- Low profile; allowing for simple bridges or tunnels to clear obstacles or infrastructure; reduced underground development costs (refer to Figure 1)
- Operational at grades up to 20%, reducing infrastructure preparation time and cost relative to grade-limited rail and truck haulage
- Short turning radius (30m) reduces rail footprint and cost
- The combined capabilities give significant flexibility in route selection and the topography to be crossed while greatly reducing the amount of disturbance to the existing land function

Cost Comparison Chart
Low Operating and Maintenance Cost
Rail-Veyor® can offer lower operating costs compared to rail haulage, truck haulage and conveyor systems.
- Automatic operation minimizes labour costs
- The drive system is energy efficient, resulting in very low operating costs
- Loads carried by cars and drive stations are relatively low, improving reliability and reducing operating and maintenance costs
- Highly reliable
- No direct operator control required; the system can be run automatically using GPS and sensor technologies
- Car system acts as a long trough allowing for continuous loading and unloading operation
- Unloading is accomplished by inverting the cars, maximizing system performance
- Systems can have multiple loading and unloading points
Ease of Maintenance
- Drives are only powered when in contact with the rail cars which results in less wear on the system
- All Rail-Veyor components are simple off the shelf components that can be purchased quickly and easily
- Drive systems are simple and can easily be replaced
System Flexibility
- Inclines up to 20% and turns of up to a 30 meter radius are possible at 8 m/s
- Capacity is expandable by adding additional trains
- Light rail, cars and drive stations can be easily relocated
- Equipment and layouts are flexible and can be designed and scaled to meet client product sizes and transportation distances
- Systems can be designed for customers with existing rail lines
Environmental Performance
- Electrical drive system and design minimizes local emissions and reduces carbon footprint
- Route and track layout can be selected to preserve land function and minimize the footprint of disturbance
- Emissions from material transfers can be contained, minimizing impact on natural and workplace environments
Safety Performance
Fully automated systems eliminate operator-mobile equipment interface and are intrinsically safe.
A further endorsement of the Rail-Veyor® technology has come through the findings of an independent study commissioned by COALTECH, a South African industry and government association. The study assessed coal transportation technologies and their application within South Africa and identified Rail-Veyor® as an attractive and competitive materials handling technology for a multitude of operating scenarios.
